We’ve shared all about finding your confidence and tips for shopping for your dress, but how do you prepare for your appointment? Don’t worry, girl – you know we’ve got you! Let’s chat about how to prepare for your wedding dress shopping appointment.
Even if you haven’t grown up dreaming of your “fairytale wedding,” you still want your dress shopping experience to be fun and memorable. You’re a bride, and you want to have that moment where you find THE DRESS.
Establish your budget. This is going to be a crucial step before you even make your first appointment. Wedding planning is all about the budget, and shopping for your dress is no exception. When you make your appointment, most shops are going to ask what your budget is. They aren’t being nosey – they need this information to make sure they’re pulling dresses that are in line with what you can purchase. There’s almost nothing that can ruin your experience more than falling in love with a dress that is $2,000 more than your budget.
Do some research. Research necklines, silhouettes, and designers to have an idea of what you’re drawn toward, but remember to keep an open mind. This is just a starting point to give you an idea of what’s available. Your Stylist will be highly trained on what works well for your body and brides are often surprised how much they love styles they didn’t initially think they would from their Pinterest boards.
Wear what makes you comfortable. If you’re comfortable wearing shapewear, do it! If it makes you uncomfortable, you don’t have to wear it! We select designers who make dresses with incredible structure and fabrics, and you’ll often find you won’t need shapewear with them. Do, however, be sure to wear appropriate undergarments. Keep in mind you’ll be in a dressing room with your Stylist assisting you, so you’ll want to be sure you’re in undergarments that make you feel your most comfortable.
Eat something before your appointment. You want to make sure you eat so you feel your best while trying on dresses, which can sometimes be a tiring and hot experience. But nothing too heavy! You don’t want to feel yuck and bloated while trying on dresses. Eat a light breakfast, then make a day of it and plan to go to lunch with your girls after your appointment!
Don’t schedule more than 2-3 appointments in a day. We know dress shopping is exciting, and it’s so fun to make a day of it with your girls, but shopping fatigue is a very real thing! You’ll end up overwhelmed with the options and unable to make a decision.
Don’t be afraid to say yes. It may be your first appointment, but when you find THE dress, don’t be afraid to say yes. To continue shopping just to extend the experience is only going to result in indecision. When you find your dress and can see yourself walking down the aisle to your forever, don’t be afraid to say Y E S.
Remember not every yes involves tears. You may know it’s the one because you don’t want to take it off. Or it may be the dress you compare everything else to. Or, you may tear up. It’s important to remember, though, that not every YES moment involves crying or applauding. Every experience is different, and what’s important to remember is to follow your gut. Just like knowing your fiancé was the one, when it feels right, you’ll know.
Don’t bring an entourage. We suggest brides keep their group to no more than four. The bigger the group, the more opinions and potential disagreements. Bringing only those you’re closest to and simply cannot make your decision without. These are the people who know you best, and will give you the best experience and most successful outcome.
You want to find a dress that fits like a dream, flatters, and reflects yours personality. As a plus size bride, this can be a serious source of stress. But it doesn’t have to be! Prepare for wedding dress shopping by using these tips. But more than anything, believe in your beauty, know the experience of a lifetime is out there, and have fun!
